The spiral staircase inside the 150-foot tall Point Arena Lighthouse. The docent explained that when the 1906 earthquake destroyed everything around, and should have destroyed the original tower itself, the steel staircase held the brick tower together long enough for a lighthouse keeper inside to escape, flexing like a spine. When the tower was rebuilt, the original staircase was retained for that reason in what became a reinforced concrete tower.
